Day 4

Day 4 was focused on creating a storyboard rather than jumping the gun to doing lo-fi prototypes. While I am here, let’s see the lo-fi prototypes first. These GUI wireframes are for a hypothetical app for a farmer containing three phases of real-time quality assessment, connecting with buyers, & performing workforce management.

However, after the discussion with Manu Dixit (my CIID buddy & Final Project advisor), it became clear that I should take a step-back and chalk out the concept first in more detail before jumping prototyping. There are step-backs that one can take in design, I choose to storyboard a success story.

Day5

My day started with waking up feeling quite groggy and to add to the misery, there wasn’t any coffee left. I tried going through my old packets and found some ground coffee and made a pour-over using Hario V60 and all the jazzy equipment I have. I realized that if the coffee is shit, nothing can help out.

My first check-in of the day was with Erik Dahl (he was the faculty for Intro to IxD and also quite famous for being an ultra-runner). 3 main takeaways from the discussion were:

  1. Rather than just connecting farmers with buyers, we should be focusing on long-term relationships. This is inspired by one of the observations from Federico (Owner, Gracias.coffee).
  2. Transaction —> Relationship. Rather than the coffee farmer looking for year-on-year transaction during every harvest, wouldn’t it be amazing if the farmer can rely on long-term relationship with the buyer. It would help in reducing the instability and the struggle to find buyers every year. It would also help them be more confident in doing experiments that help them in the future.
  3. We compared the coffee industry with the wine industry. Wine industry is thousands of years old whereas the coffee industry is quite young aging just 400 years. We discussed the important of delivering a finished product vs a raw material. There are many parallels in the world where the value of a good is increased disproportionately through clever distinguishing of the brand.
